| Song of Solomon 8:7 – “Many waters cannot quench love,
neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.” William Gladstone, in announcing the death of Princess Alice to the House of Commons, told a touching story. The little daughter of the Princess was seriously ill with diphtheria. The doctors told the princess not to kiss her little daughter and endanger her life by breathing the child’s breath. Once when the little girl was struggling to breathe, the mother, forgetting herself entirely, took the little one into her arms to keep her from choking to death. Rasping and struggling for her life, the child said, “Momma, kiss me!” Without thinking of herself the mother tenderly kissed her daughter. She got diphtheria and some days thereafter she went to be forever with the Lord. Real love forgets self. Real love knows no danger. Real love doesn’t count the cost. Solomon knew something about this thing called “love.” He knew that the force of many waters could never quench it. He knew that it was utterly impossible for floods to drown it, and he determined that if a man would give all the substance of his house for this thing called love it would be an impolite and scandalous proposition. It appears that as Christians, who should know so much about this thing called love, we seem to know so very little. When is the last time that any of us felt uncomfortable in the thought of conveying, or displaying Christian love to a stranger, an “outsider,” or an unfamiliar person. In Luke 6:32, Jesus kind of puts all of us on our heels when He said, “For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? For sinners also love those that love them.” Our love, the love of Christ that dwells in us, must supersede and surpass the superficial and shallow love that our culture has grown accustomed to. The love that forgets self, the love that knows no danger, the love that doesn’t take the time to count the cost is the kind of love that is sure to turn the head and the heart of the sinner. May each of us take a greater interest in exercising this kind of love! In Christ Always, Bro. Kerry LOVE WILL FIND A WAY, BUT INDIFFERENCE WILL ALWAYS FIND AN EXCUSE! |
